Welcome to the Musical Sleuth Website

Musical Sleuth is a brand new service aimed at composers and publishers who are unsure of how best to deal with the discrepancies which arise on their royalty statements from time to time.

My name is Jay Mistry and for the past 18 years I've been dealing with such queries at both the Performing Right Society and latterly with BMG Music Publishing Ltd.

In July 2004, I decided to start off my own royalty tracking company as I saw that not every songwriter or publisher had access to the type of service which I could provide. These days, publishers are so conscious of the need to cut costs and headcount that they have diminished the role of the royalty tracker making them concentrate more on other aspects of the business. In my experience, most publishers cannot even afford royalty trackers so the job is left to an overworked royalty manager who quite frankly (and rightly) is more concerned with the processing of royalties. As for songwriters, I found that they usually leave it to their representatives or hope that their publisher is keeping an eye on their income. The major problem here is that people just don't have the time to commit fully to a royalty tracking exercise and all that it involves.

This is where I come in. I can take the stress away from Managers, Lawyers, Royalty Managers, Publishers and Songwriters by providing the following:

  • Firstly, I would go through (subject to individual cases) up to three years worth of previous publishing statements and advise you (by way of a comprehensive report) of mistakes and missing income.
  • Secondly, I will provide a monitoring service whereby I will check all of your future statements (usually every six months) and again advise you of inconsistencies - a benefit not normally offered by auditors.

My costs will be tailor-made depending upon the size of your catalogue/statements plus the type of service which you require. However, what you are really paying for is the advice, peace of mind and if applicable, missing income.

If you feel that you may need this service then click here if you are a Composer or here if you are a Publisher.

In addition to the above, if you are a composer looking for unbiased advice on publishers and publishing, please feel free to e mail me at info@musicalsleuth.com. I will try my best to get back to you as soon as I can. If the advice is long and technical, I may have to charge a small fee.
